The Study of Moskow Watchdog

Studies of dogs, and dog related matters, are carried out and published: in general, by those who have mastered the relevant literature or aspects of it, and the formal structure of the subject (National and International Kennel Club breeding, health, and show regulations etc); in specific, by biologists, geneticists, zoologists, behaviourists, and others scientists, historians, veterinarians and breed specialists.

Informally, dogs may be studied by those with no specific scientific training, such as publicists and authors, breeders, trainers, police dog handlers, animal communicators and others, through literature, history, and personal experience. Many useful books and videotapes for the public have been produced through informal study of the dog. Those who, very rarely, refer to themselves as "cynologists", may formally or informally study such things as veterinary science, dog breeding, breed development, dog behavior and training, and the literature and history of dogs

Moskow Watchdog Breed History

The breed standard was first published in 1985 when it received "official status" in Soviet Russia. In 1992, the Federation of Dog Breeders of Russia approved the standard and then 1997 the Department of Animal Breeding and Pedigree of The Ministry of Agriculture of Russia. The standard was also approved by the Russian Kennel Club in 1997.

The Russian Kennel Club is working with the International Kennel Federation (FCI) to gain official recognition. Currently, the Moscow Watchdog is considered by the FCI as part of the 2nd group Molosser. In FCI sanctioned dog shows, they are shown in what is referred to as a "Special Show." Inside Russia, they are widely shown and a recognized breed.

Moskow Watchdog Training

Dogs have become such an important part of our society, that the need for them to fit in well with other human beings and not pose a threat or a disturbance is critical to their long term acceptance by our neighbors and others around us. Not all people are dog lovers and to make sure that they’re not inconvenienced by our pets, training is essential.

Also, dog training is an integral part of a working dog’s life for them to be able to assist humans in activities like hunting and police work. Training dogs is a specialized skill since the key difficulty lies in how to communicate efficiently with them.

All dog training is a repetition of the basic principle of reward and punishment in various forms and combinations. Communication of these signals is the key to proper training. One very important thing to remember is consistency of signals. The reliability of the training depends on how well a dog is able to be sure of what your signals mean.

It must also be mentioned that different dog breeds take to training differently. Dogs like the iconic German Shepherd are very easily trained due to their high intelligence. Another important factor is the emotional state of the dog. A dog that is frightened, anxious, or insecure doesn’t train well and this reflects the importance of factors like proper socialization of puppies.

A lot of studies have shown that proper puppy socialization goes a long way towards ensuring a good temperament and receptivity towards training. Lots of handling, petting and generally being around humans in their everyday life goes a long way towards making a dog well behaved and easy to train.

Training Moscow Watch Dog puppies should not begin too early however, as there is evidence to show that before a certain age, the brains of puppies are not significantly developed enough to process complex learning.

Professional dog trainers are best when it comes to training your Moscow Watch Dog as they will ensure that the proper habits are set for life, including how to behave around strangers. For the safety of your Moscow Watch Dog, it is your duty as an owner to ensure that he or she is well trained.

Moskow Watchdog's Temperament

Before you embark on buying a Moscow Watchdog, there are some things I have to tell you. All is not what it seems with this dog. You have to..no… I emphasize: YOU HAVE TO be aware of the fact that YOU have to be the alpha male. Accepting a leading position in the so-called pack is of vital importance. Why? For two reasons. One: Because of this dog’s size and secondly because of its interesting and often unfathomable character.

It is hard to pinpoint an exact personality trait to this big dog. Often they can be submissive and react well to orders. Other times, they need a strong and assertive person to take the upper hand with them. All Moscow Watchdogs are independent and stubborn, and so consistency on your part is of utmost importance. It is best to educcate this dog from the moment you got him/her. The sooner he knows who is boss and what the rules are, the easier it is to put him on your wavelength. The best way to educate your Moscow Watchdog is to take him to a professional training school. Often, trying at home alone, will result in you flying after him while he takes YOU for a walk.

This is not a particularly sociable dog. Sure, he wants and loves attention from his owner and family, but he doesn’t crave to be in the spotlight or to be spoilt too much. Hw will often appear aloof and independent. This stems from a strong watchdog instinct, and if you are hoping to cuddle this beast, you got your work cut out for you. He is not overly affectionate, nor does he crave affection all that much. Early socialization is a must, so that it can get used to other humans and pets as well.

Usually a Moscow Watchdog will respect the assertive manner of all family members, and doesn’t choose one single owner. Thus it is not a good idea to have children next to this breed, since it will not tolerate the haphazard and weak position of children. Probems may arise, if you aim to raise both.

Apart from all this, he will make not only a great watchdog but a companion and friend for life as well. He needs an iron hand and a heart of gold to be your true friend.

Moskow Watchdog Grooming

The Moscow Watchdog is a relatively young breed and therefore health issues have not been recorded yet. However, degeneration of the pelvic joints, rickets, food allergy and eye diseases are something to look out for as with many large dog breeds.

This breed has A LOT of fur!! Therefore, no surprises there…it should be groomed every two weeks or so to keep it looking its best. You can of course groom it more often as well. But 2 weeks is the limit, for this best. With his rather long hair, special care must be taken. The hair has a tnendency to tangle and this should be brushed out, otherwise the tangles will result in heavy knots that need to be cut out later on. And Boy! that is not something you wish to live through! This is especially important on the long-haired tail of the breed as well, since the tangles there are even more aggressive. Bathing them is not important. This is a self-cleaning breed. 2-3 times a year will suffice for bathing this heavy breed. If you wish however, a professional doggy parlour will meet your needs, when it comes to grooming, detangling and bathinghis huge dog!
